If you are not a hiker 2 days should cover the grand canyon .There are lots of other things in the area .Rt 89A into Sedona is a great ride only about 50 miles each way but great. You've got :Painted Desert,Sunset Crater ,Meteor crater ,to name a few .We stayed in Flag Staff about 1 1/4 hr ride to the big hole . Al in Fishkill
God bless our men who proudly wear the Eagle Globe & Anchor,as well as the entire coalition .

If you must burn our flag, wrap yourself in it first

Jim,

The North Rim of the Canyon might not yet be open in mid May, but it would be worth a try.

Alt 89 from Jacob Lake east to the Marble Canyon is super. We were told about this road from a biker we met on the road coming down from Wing Ding in Billings in 2000. The road runs alongside the Vermillion Cliffs and he told us that it was a must see, and indeed it was. A nice place to stay along this area is at http://www.leesferrylodge.com/ .

If you come down 89 from the Canyon area, just south of the intersection with 64 (northern road out of the South Rim) is a super restaurant (sorry I've forgotten the name), but is billed as a great restaurant and gift shop. It's probably less then a mile from the intersection on the east side of the road. Try the Navajo taco!

Good luck on your trip.

Martin,
We stopped at a restaurant/gift shop along there... the Navajo taco rings a bell. It was a trading post, had a motel as part of the complex and seems like it was in Cameron. The Restaurant was rather large with Antique Western items...A beautiful wood apothacary cabinets were prominent.
Did a search and found:

I think that's it Ray. I'm pretty sure it's just south of the 64/89 intersection, but according to my atlas that would still be Cameron. Here's a website I found after you came up with the name and it looks like the place http://www.camerontradingpost.com/.

I'm a pretty hardy eater and I think that the Navojo Taco was the first meal I never finished. Don't load up on salad and rolls if you order this bad boy. By the way it was a worker at the Grand Canyon that recommended it after I told him of our travel route.

BINGO!
That's it. We enjoyed it. We were heading northeast toward Home and didn't find good lodging until Kayenta. Wished we'd lodged at Cameron. There are some lonely stretches out there. Especially in the dark.

Ray, I know what you mean. During our 2000 tour of the Rockies after Wing Ding in Billings, we got lost one night up near the Vermillion cliffs. It was 11 PM, no other traffic, obviously no road lighting and only the anemic lighting of our old 1200. Once we figured out where we were, and we had to backtrack about 80 miles, it turned out to be a very hairy ride. I just knew there was free range wildlife out there just waiting for me to hit it. Luckily we didn't!
